How Much Can a Website Earn? Traffic, RPM and Valuation Math
The equations behind content-site revenue: pageviews, RPM, affiliate funnels, lead value — and how sites are valued at sale.
Website revenue is not mysterious; it is a handful of multiplications. Understanding them tells you which lever to pull next — more traffic, better monetisation or a higher-value audience.
1. Display advertising
Ad revenue = Pageviews ÷ 1,000 × Page RPMPage RPM (revenue per thousand pageviews) blends ad click-through, advertiser bids and how many ads each page shows. A site with 50,000 monthly pageviews at an 8 RPM earns about 400 a month. RPM varies widely by topic and audience country, so measure your own once live.
2. Affiliate commissions
Earnings = Visitors × CTR × Conversion rate × Order value × Commission20,000 visitors × 8% click-through × 3% conversion × 120 order value × 8% commission ≈ 461 a month. Compare earnings per 1,000 visitors with your ad RPM to decide which pages should prioritise which model.
3. Lead generation
For service niches, leads often beat both. If 15% of leads close on a 1,200 deal, every lead is worth 180. Even ten leads a month can out-earn tens of thousands of ad pageviews.
4. Direct sponsorships
Once a site owns an audience, sponsors pay flat fees for placements, newsletters and contest prizes. Sponsorship revenue is less tied to pageview volume and more to audience fit.
Stacking models
The strongest sites stack all four: ads on informational pages, affiliates on comparison pages, a lead form where intent is high, and sponsors on the newsletter. Avoid placing ads next to your best-converting lead form — they compete for the same click.
What a site is worth
Value ≈ Average monthly net profit × MultipleContent sites commonly trade at multiples of monthly profit that depend on age, trend, traffic diversity and owner workload. A site netting 1,500 a month at a 36× multiple is valued around 54,000.
Growth math
5% monthly traffic growth compounds to roughly 80% a year. That is why consistent publishing beats sporadic bursts.
