Formula
EMI = P × i × (1 + i)^n ÷ ((1 + i)^n − 1) P = principal, i = annual rate ÷ 12, n = monthsWorked example
Borrow 25,000 at 9% for 5 years: i = 0.0075 and n = 60, so the EMI is about 518.96. Over 60 payments you repay about 31,137.53, meaning roughly 6,137.53 is interest.
Frequently asked questions
Does a longer term lower the cost?
It lowers the monthly payment but raises total interest, because the balance stays outstanding longer.
Is this the same as APR?
This tool uses the nominal annual rate. APR may also include fees, which raises the true cost — add fees to the loan amount for a closer estimate.
Do prepayments help?
Yes. Extra principal early in the loan removes future interest on that amount for every remaining month.
